How to connect your DStv Explora to the internet in your home

How do I connect the DStv Explora to the internet?

There are two ways to do this :

Using our DStv WiFi Connector

If your DStv Explora isn’t in the same room as your router, or if you want to avoid running a cable from your router to your DStv Explora, you can connect wirelessly using our DStv WiFi Connector.

Via Ethernet

If your DStv Explora is in the same room as your router, or if you want to connect it directly, you can link them using an Ethernet cable (available from any electronic store).

How do I connect my DStv Explora to the existing internet in my home using the DStv WiFi Connector?

If you want to connect your DStv Explora to your router in your home, it’s best to use the DStv WiFi Connector if your router’s in another or when you don’t want to run cables. WiFi signal must be available in the room your DStv Explora is in.

Option 1 : Automatic setup (if your router has a WPS button)

Step 1

Using the supplied power cable, insert one end into the USB port on the back of the DStv Explora and the other end into the power input on the back of the DStv WiFi Connector.

Step 2

The Power LED on the front of the DStv WiFi Connector should glow solid amber and then change to solid white (confirming it has power).

Step 3

  • Press the WPS button on your router, followed by the WPS button on the DStv WiFi Connector.
  • Wait two minutes.
  • The Wireless LED on the front of the DStv WiFi Connector will flash white (while the WPS is in progress) and change to solid white (once an internet connection has been established).

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • If the Wireless LED on the DStv WiFi Connector flashes amber, there’s a WPS error or security type / password mismatch. We recommend you use the manual setup.
  • If the Wireless LED on the DStv WiFi Connector is solid amber, the internet connection is weak. Move the DStv WiFi Connector closer to the router and try again

Step 4

Using the supplied Ethernet cable, insert the one end into the green Ethernet port on the back of the DStv Explora. Now insert the other end into the Ethernet port on the back of the DStv WiFi Connector.

Step 5

You can now check the connectivity on your DStv Explora
  • Press HELP on the remote
  • Select “Tools”
  • Select “Connectivity Checker” and press OK

Option 2 : Manual setup (If your router does NOT have a WPS button)

Step 1

  • Place your computer close to your router.
  • Turn WiFi off on your computer.
  • Using the supplied power cable, connect one end into the USB port on your computer and the other end into the power input on the back of the DStv WiFi Connector.
  • Using the supplied Ethernet cable, insert the one end into the Ethernet port on your computer. Now insert the other end into the Ethernet port on the back of the DStv WiFi Connector.

Step 2

Open the web browser on your computer and type http://dstvwifi.local/ into the address bar.

Step 3

Select your router from the list, enter your wireless password and click on “Connect”.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • "WLAN" - network could not be found - your DStv WiFi Connector may be too far from your router or your router may be off. Please move the DStv WiFi Connector closer to your router and ensure that the router is switched on.
  • "Wrong password" - you entered the wrong WLAN password. Please enter the correct password and try again.

Step 4

Disconnect the DStv WiFi Connector from your computer.

Step 5

  • Using the supplied Ethernet cable, insert the one end into the green Ethernet port on the back of the DStv Explora. Now insert the other end into the Ethernet port on the back of the DStv WiFi Connector.
  • Using the supplied power cable, connect one end into the USB port on the back of the DStv Explora and the other end into the power input on the back of the DStv WiFi Connector.
  • The Power LED on the front of the DStv WiFi connector should light up (solid amber) and then change to solid white, confirming the DStv WiFi Connector has power.

Step 6

  • Wait two minutes.
  • The Wireless LED on the front of the DStv WiFi Connector should light up (solid White) once an internet connection has been established.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If the Wireless LED on the front of the DStv WiFi Connector is solid Amber, the internet connection is weak. To fix this, move the DStv WiFi Connector closer to the router and try again.

In addition, DStv Catch Up Plus programmes you have selected to download, won’t do so and the DStv Catch Up Plus catalogue (menu) will also not update. We also recommend that you do not place the DStv Explora in standby to ensure that these services remain active at all times.

Is there any impact to the other features on my DStv Explora while it is downloading DStv Catch Up Plus content? Can I, for example, rent a BoxOffice movie while it is downloading?

Downloading of content does not have an impact on other features and you can continue to use your DStv Explora as normal while content is being downloaded.

If I have two DStv Explora’s (linked via XtraView), does content that I select for download get downloaded to both of them?

No. Both your DStv Explora’s work as independent decoders. If you want Connected Services active on both, you will need to connect both of them to the internet. Any content that you request to download, will only download on the DStv Explora that the request was made on.

Can I use my cellphone’s WiFi hotspot to connect the DStv Explora to the internet and download content?

Yes. However, please be aware of costs charged by your service provider. If the internet connection is unstable on the WiFi hotspot, the downloads may fail (the DStv Catch Up Plus content will attempt a download 5 times before cancelling the download).

More about Remote Recordings

What is DStv’s Remote Recording?

Remote Recording is a convenient new feature that allows you to schedule a recording when you’re away from home.
Once you’ve connected your DStv Explora to the internet in your home, no matter where you are, just login to our online TV Guide, select the programme you’d like to record, click on the option to record to your DStv Explora and that’s it.

Please note: Data charges apply when using Connected Services on the DStv Explora and we recommend an uncapped ADSL account, with a minimum 2Mbps download speed when using this feature. Downloading video consumes large amounts of data so please be aware of your data package limits and costs. DStv will not be held responsible for data usage. R75 access fee payable. DStv Catch Up Plus exclusive to DStv Premium customers. Terms & Conditions apply. Visit dstv.com/getconnected for more information.

What do I need to do to use Remote Recording?

You need the following to schedule remote recordings :

  • An internet connection in your home (we recommend an uncapped ADSL account, with a minimum 2Mbps download speed when using this feature).

If the programme is more than eight days away you won’t be able to schedule a recording for it.

You can schedule a recording for a programme that’s already started, but this will be a partial recording.

You can only schedule single recordings, ie. for one programme at a time. Scheduling a series recording or manual recording is not available via Remote Recording. There’s no limit to the number of Remote Recordings you can schedule, however, you’ll need to ensure there’s enough recording space on your DStv Explora.

We recommend you switch on the Auto Delete feature on your DStv Explora. This automatically deletes programmes if space is needed for new recordings. To switch Auto Delete on :
  • Press the blue DStv button.
  • Go to “Settings”.
  • Select “User Preferences”.

How do I schedule a Remote Recording?

No matter where you are, just login to our online TV Guide, select the programme you’d like to record and click on the option to record to your DStv Explora. If your DStv Explora hasn’t been connected to the internet, is currently not connected to the internet, is off, or Remote Recording is set to “Off”, the option to record to your DStv Explora won’t be available.

Remember, you must be logged in with your DStv Connect ID so the system knows which smartcard (and which decoder) to schedule the Remote Recording on.

Remote Recordings take priority and cancel any existing recordings (the DStv Explora will attempt to schedule a recording for these events at a later date).

Does Remote Recording allow me to manage conflicting schedules or check what other programmes I’ve scheduled to record?

No. Managing conflict, checking your schedule or Playlist can only be done directly on your DStv Explora.

What happens if there are changes to the programme I scheduled a Remote Recording for?

The scheduled recording is only updated if changes are made to the programming info provided by the channel. If the programme starts late or runs over, but the programme info isn’t updated to reflect these changes, only the original timeslot is recorded.

What happens if I have more than one DStv Explora?

When scheduling your recording you have the option to select which DStv Explora you want the recording scheduled on.

How much does it cost to use Remote Recording?

Access to Remote Recording is included in your monthly subscription and access fee.

How will I know if my Remote Recording has been scheduled on my DStv Explora?

You’ll get onscreen confirmation that your recording has been successfully scheduled.
Your scheduled recordings are also listed in the “Schedule” section of the DStv Explora’s Planner.

How are Remote Recordings shown on the DStv Explora?

Your scheduled recordings are listed in the “Schedule” section of the DStv Explora’s Planner. There isn’t a different icon to show which recordings have been scheduled remotely and which have been scheduled directly on the DStv Explora.

What happens if my DStv Explora is off or not connected to the internet when I schedule the remote recording?

If your DStv Explora hasn’t been connected to the internet, is currently not connected to the internet, is off, or Remote Recording is set to “Off”, the option to schedule a recording on your DStv Explora won’t be available in the TV Guide.

When I schedule a Remote Recording, how long will it take before it appears on my DStv Explora?

The scheduled recording is listed in the planner section of your DStv Explora almost immediately. And if you are scheduling a recording for a programme that’s on right now, it will start recording almost immediately.

What happens if I’ve got a recording in progress at home (or one in conflict) and I want to record something else via Remote Recording?

Your DStv Explora deletes any scheduled recordings that are in conflict with your Remote Recording. It will try to reschedule any deleted scheduled recordings.

What if I schedule a Remote Recording but see something else I want to record at the same time?

That’s fine. When you select the new programme to be recorded, it’s automatically given highest priority and the other one is deleted (and rescheduled if possible).

The last Remote Recording you schedule always takes highest priority.

Can I delete or cancel a Remote Recording?

You can only delete or cancel recordings directly on your DStv Explora (you can’t manage your schedules remotely). You can over-ride an existing Remote Recording by scheduling a new one.

What if there’s no space available on my DStv Explora when I schedule a Remote Recording?

If the “Auto Delete” option on your DStv Explora is set to “On”, your decoder automatically deletes some recordings to make space for your Remote Recordings. The DStv Explora deletes items from the Playlist starting with the oldest, unlocked recordings.

We recommend you delete programmes from your Playlist as soon as you’ve watched them, to make sure you’ve always got space available.

We also recommend you switch on the “Auto Delete” feature on your DStv Explora. This automatically deletes recordings if space is required for new ones. To switch “Auto Delete” on :

  • Press the blue DStv button.
  • Go to “Settings”.
  • Select “User Preferences”.
  • Select “Recordings”.
  • Set “Auto Delete” to “On”.
  • Press BACK to save your setting.
